Short films

Short films are emerging as creative outlets for filmmakers seeking new forms of storytelling. New voices to A List talent from Wes Anderson to Ethan Hawke have recently produced works in the under 40 minute category. Vilpa Max is a new streaming platform dedicated to showcasing global mini films.

A Black and Paper interview with Vilpa Max founder Alejandro Vilpa.

Why did you decide to start a platform for short films?

Short films are often the first format that emerging filmmakers work in. I wanted to create a space that supports them at that early but crucial stage of their careers. At the same time, audience consumption habits are shifting. Viewers are increasingly drawn to shorter, more concentrated formats that deliver powerful experiences in less time. Vilpa Max exists at the intersection of those two realities — supporting new voices while responding to evolving viewing behaviour.

Why do you think A-list talent are suddenly making short films?

Short-form storytelling is gaining wider recognition and legitimacy. Audiences are beginning to understand that a short film can be just as impactful as a feature — it simply offers a different kind of experience. For established talent, short films allow creative freedom, experimentation, and more intimate storytelling without the scale and constraints of large productions.

As a cinematic art form, short films often lean heavily into emotion, atmosphere or visual impact. Do you think mainstream audiences can relate to that style of storytelling?

Absolutely. Production quality in short films has increased significantly in recent years. Many shorts today are crafted at an exceptionally high artistic and technical level. What’s changing is perception. As audiences become more open to diverse formats, short films are no longer seen merely as stepping stones — they’re becoming a legitimate part of the future of film business and storytelling.

In the era of superhero franchises, how do you get audiences to give short films a chance?

Franchises are incredible — they create cultural moments and global communities. Short films aren’t competing with that. They offer something different: focused storytelling, bold experimentation, and emotional immediacy. It’s not about replacing any format, but about filling a gap in the ecosystem by offering audiences another meaningful way to experience cinema.

Was there one film that triggered your passion for cinema?

My love for cinema was shaped by highly artistic films such as Black Swan and Whiplash. Those films explore obsession, discipline, and the emotional intensity behind artistic excellence. In many ways, my own short film, The Undertone of David Jansen, follows a similar classical music and artistic pathway. Looking back, I may have been subconsciously inspired by how Darren Aronofsky and Damien Chazelle portrayed the psychological depth behind creative ambition.

Is Vilpa Max available worldwide?

Currently, Vilpa Max is available in the Middle East, North Africa, and the UK. However, we are actively working toward expanding our catalogue and making the platform accessible worldwide — potentially as early as this year.
