When I write about destinations these days there is a feeling of guilt because do in modern times over tourism has become a problem. Once a location’s image gets shared on IG or TikTok, an invasion could ruin the most reposeful places. Hopefully, the Saxony-Anhalt town of Naumburg stays a bit of a secret. With 33,000, the 1000 year old medieval city comes across as a living postcard with giant churches, narrow streets, old tramcars, and decorative facades.
A few historical who spent time on the city’s Saale River shores include Napoleon during his 1813 retreat. Goethe visited the famous cathedrals in 1765 and 1776. Friedrich Nietzsche lived in a colorful two floor house in 1858.

Naumburg is about 2.5 hours from Berlin by car.
The closest airport is Leipzig-Halle.
