The Met Gala looks, well underwhelming is a nice way of putting it. Certainly, originality seemed lacking on fashion’s biggest Red Carpet. The “Fashion is Art” motif looked dull. Instead of inspiring, this year fell flat filled with tepid designs. Hype did not match the reality. What’s becoming increasingly obvious about Anna Wintour’s power flexing night is rather than showcasing fashion the lifestyle of the rich and famous peacock strut comes across as calculated, stale and wax figured adorned in expensive costumes.
Going forward, self-perception could work a miracle for the Met Gala. Maybe it is time for a format rethink, perhaps going lowkey without the pomp and ceremony. The whole affair came across as less elegant, more desperate attention seeking. However, there were standouts: Sabrina Carpenter, SZA. Tayana Taylor and Colman Domingo all hit a high style note.
Even the most veteran Global Editorial Director would fall short pursuing the dual task of mass media relevance while being exclusive. Attending these “Aren’t we fabulous” parties are not what they used to be.
