Madame Gres in Berlin

In Berlin at the Kultforum is presenting 25 Madame Gres pieces.

The Fashion Sphinx, a mystery, born in 1903 Germaine Emile Krebs wanted to be a sculpture but due to her parents resistant the Parisian entered the world fashion.  Incorporating a love of the statuette figures, Krebs’ shaped fabrics into classical forms of couture forms.  First working at house Alix, during World War 2 the Madame Gres house opened in Paris.

Unlike contemporizes, Chanel or Dior, Gres maintained a low profile while the most famous women in the world stood patiently while the “Queen of Draping” wrapped their bodies in lush fabrics.   The couture designer’s collections were known for the Greco-Roman references of pleats.  However, the other aspect of her prolific looks was based on geometric shapes.

The Many Shades of Gres runs until 11.10. 2026.
