Sony Camera

Normally I would’ve never bought a second-hand camera. However, there is a first time for everything, on this occasion, two firsts: A Sony Camera and a mirrorless device.  Why the purchase? The Trump Tariffs put me in a panic.  Gadget prices will increase, fast, on top of possible shortages. The knock down effects will affect second hand technology products.

I sometimes use cameras over smartphones for photography during fashion weeks and film festivals.  The reasons are I would need two or three phones and chargers for the work.

Sony is the third most popular camera brand after Canon and Nikon.  The Japanese company bought Minolta’s SLR division in 2003. Several photographers and creators recommended the Minato Japan corporation’s image hardware over the years citing good the video and image quality.

A mirrorless full frame seemed a bit out of the zone for a perpetual want to be picture taker.   The difference between regular cameras and mirrorless is the EVF is direct to the sensor.   At the local camera store, three visits, numerous hours of research.  I decided on a budget.  The Alpha 7ii was available, released ten years ago as a semi professional E-Mount.  The price was right.  I got two lenes. However, the video quality is 1080 instead of 4K yet not a serious drawback for uploading videos online.

Set up time is crucial.  I recommend watching as many videos as possible.  The Sony interface is not intuitive even with the personalized buttons. The 3-inch articulating high resolution screen works well even If I wish it were a flip design.

The auto focus options are a bit tricky at first depending on the setting.  The center and zone focus modes have become my standard.  When shooting a landscape, the wide focus is better.  The camera is equipped with image stabilization.

The Sony Alpha 7ii is a solid durable brick. I took pictures in the rain, no problem. The 1.22-pound body feels sturdy.  The left side ports allow for external mics and headphones.  I am not a fan of the video functions with the added steps of needing to turn the dial the press button. In a rush this process got a little annoying.

The battery life is not great.  I recommend carrying two spares.  Do not buy the cheap batteries online.  They have a reputation of causing technical problems.

I bought a cheaper model, took it in for repair under the warranty. The store replaced the model with a better one.

With trial and errors I am stepping into the Mirrorless Realm with the Sony Alpha7ii. So far, so good for a first round with plans to upgrade in the future.
