When scrolling through social media threads, John Galliano’s picture came up under the headline with Zara. After doing a double take, reading the text, the former Dior designer is collaborating with the Inditex brand for two years. After exiting Margiela in 2024, the UK creative vanished, putting in an appearance at JW Anderson’s Couture collection in January, Galliano went silent.

According to the press announcement, one of fashion’s most talented personae will reinterpret Zara’s archives. Yes, you read it right, “archive”. HUH! What exactly is this company’s archive? The Spanish label based its business model on copying other fashion designs, then using fast production turnover times, getting the looks into the stores well months before the originals.
This is truly a baffling combo on the surface, with common synergies. Born in Gibraltar, Galliano is one of his generations most visionary talents. Zara is aglobal juggernaut with over 2,000 stores. John is reaching into deep pockets while Northern Spain retailer looks for a way to further trade up after introducing more expensive pieces. What will be the price? Will they use better materials? The reputational risks are great for the designer, already the social media jokes and memes are brutal.
In the past many fast fashion stores have worked with luxury brands to create limited capsule collections including: Lagerfeld for H&M, Jil Sander for Uniqlo, Gap and Balenciaga, but those were one offs. The March 17th announcement is a long-term agreement. A designer known for imaginative collection is now producing everyday wear.
One thing for certain, shopping at Zara just got more interesting.
