Budget point and shoot cameras have become incredibly popular with buyers. Suddenly instead of using a smartphone to snap a photo, picture takers are pulling out small compact digital cameras. The pocketable devices are easy to use, lightweight and attention getting with different colors and styles. A popular P&S with Gen Z is the AgfaPhoto Realishot DC5200 with its 21 MP, smile detection and CMOS Sensor.
A Black and Paper exclusive interview with AgfaPhoto Marketing Director Julien Lelarge on why his company’s cameras has become a trendy tech accessories.
Why is the DC5200 camera popular with the under 30 somethings?
For the DC5200 and DC5500 (same design but different sensor) the key selling point for the under 30 is the design and the compact size combined with a Retro Camera Brand. Having 6 different colors (Black, Blue, Pink, Purple, Red, Silver) also enhances the appeal.
What is the story, why an uncomplicated compact camera in the time of smartphones?
For people under 30/35, a simple, compact digital camera is a nostalgic product that reminds them of their childhood. They appreciate having their photos stored on an SD card rather than in the cloud or online. Their smartphone has become an all-in-one device, often overloaded with content, and they now prefer having a dedicated, portable camera solely for photography. However, it must be compact and trendy. Social media has played a key role in driving the product’s popularity, further fueling its success.
How does the picture quality compare to other devices?
First, we need to be honest: a €60 camera can’t compete with a €1,500 smartphone. However, consumers aren’t looking for the same kind of image quality. The grainy texture, the colours, and the lighting are characteristics typical of digital cameras from the 2000s—qualities that people specifically seek when they purchase this type of product.

This is a fun camera, being candid, the big question, selfies and videos, does it work well with these formats?
On the DC5200 and DC5500 there’s no flip screen or mirror to optimize the selfies so it’s like we use to do before: we turn the camera around and try to center the best we can. The video quality is quite acceptable but to be honest the consumers buy it mostly for the pictures.

The camera colors, expansive, appealing, were those design choices? Style choice?
The design makes the first difference for this type of product so the colors were also a strategic choice. We started in 2018 with 3 colors: Black, Silver and Red. Black is still the best-selling color. When we saw that the young generation was our main target, we decided to add the pink, blue and purple colors to attract more of them. On the front of the camera there is a metal plate that gives the product and color a distinctive style. This also sets it apart from competing products, which are often made entirely of plastic.
